On 30.05.2011 in 12:30 h. at the Archaeology Department at the Philosophical Faculty (University of Belgrade), I defended my thesis titled: 'The chipped and ground stone industry from the neolithic site of Rug Bair at Gorubinci, in a wider regional context', before the commission consists of: Ph. D. Dusan Mihailović (mentor), Ph. D. Nenad Tasić, Ph. D. Dragan Antonović and Ph. D. Boban Tripković. I received a degree of Master of science (M. Sci.) in archaeology, which is the one step of a doctorate, and considering the importance of my work, the next degree is not so far away. :)

The chipped and ground stone industry from the neolithic site of Rug Bair at Gorubinci, in a wider regional context

-Abstract-

This paper covers the unpublished stone artifacts from 1970s, taken from a trench from the excavation at Rug Bair, and today housed in the Museum and Institute for protection of Stip, Macedonia. Through the stone material, an attempt was made a more comprehensive picture of the raw material, technical and typological characteristics of the Neolithic stone industry at this site to be gained as well as its relationship with related simultaneously industries.

All stone artifacts from the site at Rug Bair, village of Gorobinci (Saint Nicholas), were divided into three main groups: chipped, ground and grind/abrasive stone tools. The access to this material is reduced to petrographic and technological-typological analysis and definition of basic categories and types of tools, based solely on morphological characteristics of artifacts. The results of the technological and typological analysis and analogy with other stone industries in the Neolithic cultures of the southeastern Balkans, contributed to further clarify, in a regional context, certain processes that occurred in the Neolithic period in the territory of the Republic of Macedonia and the Balkans.

A small number of artifacts from the Neolithic stone assemblages from the Republic of Macedonia are the result, above all, the lack of knowledge about the lithic materials, the absence of sieving and flotation, as well as the personal choice of researchers which type of findings is to be kept for the assemblage. Stone tools have not been yet analyzed in detail in the Macedonian Archaeology and Neolithic or New Stone Age in Macedonia, and are still identified only with the ceramic production.

This thesis is an attempt by a methodological way, to sublimate in one place all aspects of the stone industry which will contribute and enable to further studies about this topic in the Republic of Macedonia.

Macedonia: New Laws to Have an Adverse Impact on Cultural Heritage

Ever since I started blogging, I became involved in new media and media in general in the Republic of Macedonia. I am the only archaeologist writing in public about cultural heritage and my opinion is constantly cited on Internet and in the newspapers. This is one of my statements about defunct Law on the Cultural Heritage of Macedonia which will probably have a big impact on archaeology..

Vasilka Dimitrovska, author of the acclaimed blog Archaeological Diary, reacted [mk] to the fast-track lawmaking in Macedonia from a professional perspective:

The state adopted the Draft-Law on Treatment of Illegally Constructed Objects [mk], popularly known as the Law for Legalization of Illegal Constructions, which will probably deal the final blow to the cultural heritage in the Republic of Macedonia (RM). It is common knowledge that most of archaeological sites remain in rural areas, but there are many in urban environments – in the midst of cities. Most of these sites also house illegal buildings which forever destroyed the ancient towns underneath. According to the Archaeological Map of RM (Volume 2, published by the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1995), just on the territory of the city of Skopje there are over 150 registered archaeological sites. These areas overlap with well-known tumors of illegal constructions in [the villages/suburbs of] Volkovo, Zlokukjani, Pripor…
For instance, the villas of the rich elite in Zlokukjani have encroached well within the 40 hectares covering the remains of the ancient Roman town of Scupi, forever destroying the history that belongs to the citizens of Macedonia and the whole world.
I wanted to write a longer, more documented post about this, but there’s no point in delaying. By legalizing illegal construction around or within the areas of archaeological sites, we will lose a large portion of the Macedonian cultural heritage. This includes some important ancient cities, such as Scupi, Heraclea [mk], Lychnidos, etc. This administration has invested enormous amounts of money in archaeological digs, which, however, failed to produce a single [scientific peer-reviewed] publication, even after all these years. This current law on legalization of illegal construction will destroy the effects of all their investments in archeology.

As an archaeologist, Ms. Dimitrovska stated that she’s obliged to care about the entire cultural heritage, regardless of the time period of its making. The first step, in her opinion, would be to update and implement the defunct Law on the Cultural Heritage.

It is obvious that those who wrote the Law haven’t consulted anyone – an old and well-known problem in Macedonia. The view from the Cabinet is somewhat limited… It is sad to say it, but the people did not stir about many other things that affect their lives more directly, so it will remain numb about this too. And again we return to the problem of education, and et cetera, and round and round…

Global Voices recently covered complaints by another blogger, who objected to the construction of new state buildings over probable archeological sites in the center of the Macedonian capital.

With the new Law on Treatment of Illegally Constructed Objects, the owners of illegal construction sites areinvited to pay EUR 1 per square meter of property to be legalized. As usual, the government started a costly advertising campaign to popularize the law, based on videos played on regime-friendly TV stations. This attempt to replenish the depleted state budget is presented as a way for the urban [mk] and rural [mk] lower classes, who invested in building homes without permits or all the required papers, to cheaply gain realownership. It also comes in handy to the local power-mongers who have built mansions in nominally protected areas, such as national parks.

To increase the cultural benefit, here’s a bit more information about the archaeological sites from Macedonia mentioned in this post, with links to appropriate Wikipedia articles:

Scupi was the Roman precursor of the current capital of Skopje. Founded as a military camp around 168 BC, it grew into a prosperous city, which was then destroyed in the earthquake of 518 AD. The population moved several kilometers down the river and even used some of the old marble to construct the current “old town,” i.e. the Kale fortress, a site of this recent incident. Some of the gravestones from its cemeteries can be seen in the center of Skopje near the City Museum, while the actual site is near the road to Kosovo, not open to visitors.
Heraclea Lyncestis is near Bitola, the second-largest city in the Republic of Macedonia. Founded by King Phillip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC, this “City of Heracles in the land of the Lynx” still contains important Roman and early Byzantine remains, including the famous mosaics and theatre. Several years ago, the government adorned its steps [mk] with several Roman sculptures from this site.
Lychnidos is the ancient Greek name of Ohrid. This pristine and strategically important area has been continuously inhabited for several thousand years, and is well-known for its preserved architecture, icons and other treasures from the medieval and Ottoman periods. New digs under this layer, made during the last two decades, also yielded artifacts from more ancient times, including an amphitheatre, which is again used for concerts; and graves of alleged Ancient Macedonian warriors/generals (golden masks & weaponry) and noblewomen (sophisticated jewelry).

Arheoblog as the best promoter of Macedonia in 2010

After the Croatian nomination when Arheoblog was proclaimed as one of the best and the most influential ex-Yu Balkan website for 2010, I received another award as one of the best promoters of Macedonia for the past year, which is one of the purposes of this site and my blogging.

The annual award for 'The best promoter of Macedonia' for 2010 was initiated by the project Macedonia Loves You”, and organized and supported by three official media partners (newspaper Nova Makedonija, Kapital - bisnis magazine and Television Kanal 5). The award didn't have a competitive character, except to recognize achievements of extraordinary people from different walks of life, who have one common goal - promotion of various Macedonian causes. The winners were chosen by the public at a contest, which was running on the social network Facebook in the past three months.

The main ceremony was held on the 16 March 2010 at the City museum of Skopje with a lot of publicity, journalists and media. As a winner I received special medal, certificate and honorable recognition for my activities promoting Macedonia.

Summer Field School at Vinicko Kale 2011

This year between June 27 – July 8, 2011 there will be for the first time the Summer Field School at Vinichko Kale (Vinica Fortress), within the ongoing long-term archaeological excavations. The project is cooperation between Vinica city museum and EUBA, as a chance to promote both, the site and the city. I hope tht this project which aim is to contribute to the higher education in the Republic of Macedonia and the region, will be successful.

The meaning of the terms 'blog' and 'blogger' has been the subject of numerous debates. Independent of the definitions that can be found on the Internet, it can be said that blogs are about ideas, creation, exchange of opinions, expression of attitudes, debating, and much more. Blogs are a manifestation of creativity in its original form by means of now available interactive multimedia forms.

Furthermore, blogs can be excellent virtual places for learning, self-education and discussion, mostly with an expert in a particular field of interest, which a blog owner might be. This article is based on my personal experience with blogging about archaeology, mostly in Macedonian language. And all the challenges I was facing with during last few years.

The world of eneolthic figurines from Republic of Macedonia

My area of specialization is the chipped stone industry, but I love the prehistoric art left by our ancestors. The prehistoric figurines from Macedonia reached the international public at the 'Unearthed' exhibition, at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, and undoubtedly attracted attention concerning the question about the spatial and temporal boundaries of the Neolithic societies of the world. Recently, an eneolithic site in the village of Spancevo in eastern Macedonia was excavated and gave us more wonderful peaces of prehistoric art in the shape od small female figurines decorated with various patterns. I hope the exhibition, currently on display in the city museum of Kocani, will travel around the world and once again show the fabulous dimension of our ancestors.

For a long time Republic of Macedonia was terra blanca in the field of rock art and prehistoric rock painting. That is, until the dicovery of Cocev Kamen, a rock from a volcanic origin consisting of caves and rock-shelters. It is believed that Cocev Kamen had been used as a temple from prehistoric times (Neolithic/Bronze age), throughout Roman times, up until the Middle Ages, due to the surrounding archaeological sites and the abundance od pottery fragments, as well as the flint tools.

There are visible interventions on the stone surface everywhere, in the form of stairs, pools, thrones, and one big cave was completly rearanged, with a large part of its wall ripped off to make a fenced platform looking at the nearby hill, which contains big stones looking like megaliths. Considering the sacred purposes of the site combined also with these megaliths, it is also believed that Cocev Kamen had been used as a prehistoric observatory. This topic instigated a big debate in Macedonian archaeology through the media, but none of the opinons made have been confrmed yet with a scientific paper.

Some of the rock shelters are decorated with red figurative prehistoric rock art. The comparison with caves in Bulgaria, but esspecially with some rock paintings in Italy (such as Porto Badisco), indicates that these rock paintings belong to prehisory. Currently I am working on a scientifical paper to make a comparison of Cocev Kamen with some Balkan sites or maybe wider. Wish me a luck, because the site and science deserve for Cocev Kamen to be made known to a wider public.

Project: Skopje tour - City Tour of the Decade

What is cultural heritage about? Does people from some country can recognize in the present, what kind of category will be included on the heritage list in the future? What are the character and the impact of this heritage projects for the new generations? These are some of the questions I am facing of as an archaeologist and as a professional tourist guide every day. And actually, how it looks like for I day, if you imagine that you are a tourist in your own city, and you hiring a guide to tell you the story.

In his latest project entitled "City Tour 2000-2010", the artist Zoran Poposki hired me, because I work both, with cultural heritage and with tourism. This time I gave him a tour of the cultural landmarks created during the last decade in Skopje, the city we have lived in since our birth.

In the description of the project, he will write: ''The tour of the new icons of the urban cultural landscape is set out against a background of massive economic and social transformation of public space in this post-socialist city, resulting in an increased need for interpretation of this new topography of meaning''.

The Bradt Travel Guide for Macedonia

I got a lovely present a week ago from the British tourists - The Bradt Travel Guide for Macedonia! I was guiding them through the cultural and historical monuments in western Macedonia, and they left me their travel book since I don't have a chance to buy it or order it via internet. The Bradt Travel Guide for Macedonia is probably the best travel guide in a foreign language, I have ever seen.The Bradt guide actually is the only English-language guidebook to Macedonia.

The Bradt Travel Guide for Macedonia gives a lot information about our country, cultural-historical monuments, customs, folk festivals, wine, archaeology – and, of course, Macedonia's fast-improving hotels, restaurants and bars. It is organized in two chapters. The first part is general, and the second part includes a guide for several regions, concentrating mostly on Skopje, Ohrid (included on UNESCO heritage list) and National Parks, as well as the other part of Macedonia with all the opportunities for the tourist leisure they offer.

The third edition of The Bradt Travel Guide for Macedonia was published in November 2009; it contains 360 pages (16 pages of colour photos) and about 45 maps. Of course, this is not a finished version. There are a lot of chapters to be included, rewrite or update. But this book is very important for Macedonia and our tourism, due to the fact that the history of Macedonia is very problematic especially when our neighbouring countries are writing about it. Guys, thank you for the present. I shall try to read it carefully and send my comments to the editors for improvement of the articles. :)

Unearthed - the exhibition

I grew up in Skopje, surrounded by the archaeological sites in the vicinity of my neighbourhood. Skopje geographically is not a big city, only 22 km long, and 12 km wide. But Skopje lies on more than 20 Neolithic registerd sites by now, and we even didn't finished our prospection. This is very special, because one of the perals - Tumba Madzari, is the site which is very close to my home. I had a chance to work there as a student, and later on collaborative projects. Tumba Madzari yilded amount of artefacts, including the figurines of Mother Goddess, typologicaly and morphologicaly unique for Republic of Macedonia.

From a chronological point of view, the Macedonian Neolithic can be subdivided into three separate phases (Early, Middle, and Late) in accordance with the periodization applied for the South-East European Neolithic (VI-IV milenium). This chronology is general and basically made by macroscopicaly comparison of pottery ornamentation with simultaneous parallel similar cultures. There are rare cases when some material is C14 dated.

This is a poster I made as a guest to the 14th Neolithic seminar, held in Ljubljana in 2007, within the Documenta Praehistorica. The patterns are taken from the pottery of Tumba Mrshevci, but acctualy, this kind of patterns are visible in Neolithic everywhere around the world, even in a remote areas where the Jomon pottery is spread.

Currently there is a big exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, named as Unearthed. This exhibition featuring prehistoric figurines from Japan, Romania, Macedonia, Albania, and the UK. It brings new and fresh approach to prehistoric world, showing to us the common Neolithic patterns, or they were just interweaving cultures. A figurines of prehistoric women of Macedonia are being displayed in Britain, within this exhibition, dating from the middle of the 6th millennium until the first half of the 3rd millennium B.C (Neolithic and Eneolithic).

I specialized chipped stone industry, but I love Neolithic art left by our ancestors. The prehistoric figurines from Macedonia reached the wider public and it will undoubtedly attract attention concerning the question about the spatial and temporal boundaries of the world Neolithic societies. And that makes me so proud of my cultural heritage. :)

Two weeks ago I had a chance to walk around Yasen - Multipurpose Area with exceptional flora and fauna, once in the time of communism forbidden for the people and now declared to be a reserve. This was not my first visit of Yassen. I have been twice in this wonderful destination, but always I am astonished by the surrounding and untouched environment. For the first time I entered Yassen in 1997/1998 as a member of the Speleological society 'Peoni' from Skopje, because we were hired from the ELEM (Macedonian power plants) to map all the caves and shelters in the region cover with the artificial lake of Kozjak today. One year later I back with the Museum of Macedonia for a protective excavation of the cave Golema Pesht, where for the first time in Macedonian archaeology was found Paleolithic site, later dated with C14 at 45/50000 BC (Mousterian period).

This time I was a guest of The Macedonian Chamber of Tourism, having a chance to enter and walk around Yassen throughout two (Katlanovo and Kula) from four natural gates. Also we were hosted by the employers of Yassen with the exceptional lunch made by the pheasant soup and a pheasant meat taken from pheasantry within this region.

Yassen is covering about 32000 square meters of area mostly with forest and there are roads as well as a number of shorter non-asphalt roads. Except from hunting, Yassen sees its future in developing of the natural resources and the eco-tourism. You can alway walking, riding, mountain bycycling, camping by the lakes of Matka and Kozjak, paragliding, fishing, mountain climbing, or just enjoying in the colors and in the ambiance which feels like you are entering into another world. So far away, but only on 30 km from Skopje, the capital of Republic of Macedonia, this reserve open it gates for the visitors just 2 years ago.

These are some of the picture I have been taken during the visit in this multipurpose region of Yassen. The diversity of the landscape, flora and fauna it's breathtaking and will always brings you back closer to the nature.

After a long wait my digital microscope from the Celestron brand finally arrived via the Bulgarian Federation of Astronomy based in Sofia. The microscope is a miniature (it is 10 cm long and weighs only 113 grams) accompanied by a metal stand for static pictures and videos which can be recorded from a variety of positions. The auto lighting is automatic when you plug the USB in the computer, and the installation program (compatible with PC and MAC) is user friendly. The digital optic power is from 10 to 150 times which is quite enough for inspecting the surface and structure of the artifacts, and is suitable for micro-investigation of the finds.

The microscope is ideal for studying the details in many cases, like: stamps, rocks, minerals, insects, plants, other materials such as textiles, while in archeology can be used in work with coins, small decorative objects made of semiprecious stones, and generally all artifacts that are research subject of archaeologists. I bought it specifically for the study of stone tools that I work with and identification of the traces of use (crops, pigments, wood) of various materials which left a mark on their surface.

Hand-held digital microscope for both its purpose and function is relatively cheap. If I can afford it as an individual, then it must be a standard equipment for the institutions which works with artifacts, museums and the Faculty of Archaeology. But unfortunately, this it is not the case in Macedonia.

Ohrid - Macedonia's forgotten gem

Ohrid, the cradle of Christianity and cyrilic letter, home of more than 300 churches in the region, mostly of Byzantium period.

This is the front and the revers view of Macedonian 1000 denars (~16EUR), issue 1996 and issue 2003. Front view is taken from the church of St.Vrachi-Mali, Ohrid, early XIV century. The Icon of the Madonna Episkepsis is depicted in its true dimensions, with an image of the Christ Child in the right. The presence of tow angeles in the upper corners of the icon symbolize the depiction of the Sorrowful Virgin. Reverse view represents detail (external additions built by Archbishop Grigorie in the 14th century) from the church of "St. Sofia" in Ohrid, originally built in X-XI centuries. This church was the seat of the Ohrid archbishopric, and contains many invaluable frescoes from XI ond XIV centuries.

Rich with prehistory and remains form antique period, such as the Ancient theatre, that what is visible currently in Ohrid, is built mainly between the 7th and 19th centuries; it has the oldest Slav monastery (St Pantelejmon) and more than 800 Byzantine-style icons dating from the 11th to the end of the 14th century. After those of the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow, the Icon Galerry in Ohrid is considered to be the most important collection of icons in the world.

The beginning of the excavations 2010 and blog about Tauresium, the birth place of Justinian I

The archaeological excavations at the site of Gradiste in the village Taor (near Skopje), popularly known as the ancient city of Tauresium, perhaps the birthplace of Emperor Justinian I, officially started on 17.03.2010. Taor is one of my favorite places where I had participated as a student in the 2000/01 and in the meantime with very modest financial means, this site has grown into a tourist place worthy of presentation. In 2007 I made a video documentary about Tauresium (in Macedonian) and this year I am a part of the excavation team.

After almost four years break, I return to work in the field continuously since my last engagement in 2007. Actually, I haven’t been in the field since 2006. In 2007 I was working at the Skopje Fortress excavation, but I was responsible for the documentation sector, so mostly I spent my time at the computer.

Despite of its official website, Tauresium in this campaign 2010 got a blog where we will update whatever happens on the site and its surroundings, as well as the adventures of the team. For the first time in Macedonia, the public will have an on-line access to the work of archaeologists and will be available to follow the excavation including the finds we will discover .

Happy First of March! - Среќна Баба Марта

In certain parts of my country there is a custom associated with the first day of March. It is called "Grandma March" Day. On this day typical red and white tassels, pom-poms or knit (braided) bracelets all known as martinki are exchanged, given to loved ones and they are worn pinned on clothing or tied on the wrist. The red and white woven threads symbolize the wish for good health and prosperity. They are heralds of the coming spring. People wear them until the nature starts to bloom and then hang them on trees.

Според одредени верувања ова легенда своите корени ги влече уште од антиката (1,2) иако неоспорен е фактот дека таа била почитувана на целиот Балкан, најисточно вклучително со регионот на Охрид чии траги останеле во помнењето на луѓето за да бидат преточени во песна. Толкувањето на овој празник потекнува оттаму дека Ксантика бил празник на природата, пролетта и цвеќињата, светлината и љубовта, празник на духовноста и убавината, будење на енергијата и почетокот на новиот живот.

Постојат различни обичаи при традиционалното подарување на една мартинка. Генрално, таа секогаш е со конци од црвена и бела боја испреплетени или исплетени, од кои црвената ја симболизира боја на крвта, а белата на чистотата. Се подарува на 1-ви Март во чест на Баба Марта и се носи околу рака или закачена на облеката се додека расцвета првото дрво. Потоа се закачува на него со желби за сопственото и за добро здравје на своите блиски во тековната година. Секако дека постојат варијанти на тема, но ова е основата на обичајот.

Carnival in Strumica 2010

"Every year with centuries, in a small city in the most southern part of Macedonia, there is a Carnival. The Strumica carnival has a long tradition with centuries. During the Middle Ages it was mentioned by the traveler Evlija Chelebija in 1670. The word Carnival is derived from from the Latin c a r n e – meat and v a l i – goodbye, meaning ''goodbye meat'', which associates the beginning of the fast, in this case the Lenten Fast."

Trimeri is a very old Christian custom which was practiced a long time ago, from the beginning of Christianity. The name derives from the Greek words ''tris meres'', which means ''three days'' according to the length of the beginning of the Lent. Trimeri is a movable feast and it starts after the Day of Forgiveness (Prochka), the first Sunday of Eastern Lent. The Day of Forgiveness according to the Orthodox Church is a feast which precedes the Honorable Fast Season (Great Lent), the greatest fasting period which prepares all Christians for the greatest feast of the church year, Easter. Also in Macedonia there is another carnival for the Day of Forgiveness (Prochka) in a city of Prilep.

This year, according to the media, there were over 50,000 visitors which followed the parade throughout the streets and the town square of Strumica, and about 2,500 masked individuals took part in the event (from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Turkey and Finland). Last Tuesday together with my friends I was a part of this very successfully organized carnival and enjoyed in the masks diversity and the magnificent creations. The Strumica carnival is an international event and since 1995 has been included in the family of carnival cities, i.e. the Federation of European Carnival Cities.

Archaeological Diary informs [MKD] about the opening of the official website [MKD] for governmental Program for Revitalization of the Old Bazaar in Skopje, one of the most significant cultural treasures from the Ottoman period. Archeologist Vasilka Dimitrovska notes that for true revitalization, one has to work on providing content and events that would bring the visitors back into the area, because “the city's spirit consists of people also, not just architecture.” (via Ping.mk)

For those who are not familiar with the Macedonian ethnology, this it is not an authentic video, and it should be noted that part of the shots in the song so called "Necklace" by Vasko Serafimov (in which the famous Serbian singer Momcilo Bajagic - Bajaga is a guest) are recorded at the Samuel's Fortress and Ancient Theater in Ohrid, part in MNT (Macedonian National Theater), and directed and edited by the artist Kiro Urdin.

Maybe this song does not represent the best mix of contemporary sounds and ethno melody as a way they do it Synthesis or Baklava - very popular Macedonian ethno groups, but certainly it is a good effort a part of tradition which the Macedonian people carry in their genetic code, to be placed in a few minutes' song. Personally, I like it. Presenting the part of the rich Macedonian traditional spiritual and material culture in this manner, we have chances to survive in such a different world of nations. I will cite the very famous Orwell's quote: "All nations are equal, but some nations are more equal than others". Well, currently we belong to the group of less equal nations concerning our cultural heritage which we have to display in front of the public very soon. Because, if we do not do it, we will be forgotten as if we have never existed.

Adam of Macedonia

At the beginning there was the Earth. And it turned into clay. Then it shaped into a figurine, the hands which created it – divined it, and gave it a name – Adam. A small ceramic figurine of a male torso, in a seated position, has been creating a real turmoil in the scientific community since a couple of years ago. This figurine was excavated at the turn of the millennium, from the archeological site of Govrlevo (Skopje, Macedonia). This figurine is dated to be some 6000 years old, and represents one of the most unique archeological finds in the world. It has received the epithet of a millennial find.

According to Milos Bilbija, the archeologist who excavated this miraculous figurine: “the maker’s inventiveness is strongly suggestive to the extent that the modern observer can easily recognize a 6000-year-old message in it”. At times it reminds of the famous sculpture by Rodin - The Thinker; however, Adam of Macedonia offers an unusually artistic craft in shaping this male torso in a seated position, with an accentuated anatomy, deeply redrawn belly, as if the figurine was trying to point at some kind of a diaphragmatic breathing, and there is even a broken phallus.

When you take a look at this figurine, you simply cannot remain indifferent to its contextual message. The incompletely preserved expression of a human male, caught in the moment of either diaphragmatic breathing is one of the most important foundation practices for meditation. When the diaphragm muscle contracts, it pulls the bottom of the lungs downward, causing them to fill, while the ribs flare outward to the sides. The chest and abdominal muscles are not used in diaphragmatic breathing. Conscious diaphragmatic breathing is extremely relaxing to the autonomic nervous system and is essential preparation for deep meditation.

Is it possible that at the time when the Great Mother’s cult was in full bloom in Macedonia, a unique and admirable object of such importance for our understanding of spirituality can be produced by the hands of those who apparently have marked the most curious epoch of human existence, that of the matriarchate. This in itself is a very untypical discovery for the period, since it is strange to see that the Great Mother Goddess, who could hear all the prayers of the people and could provide soothing to their troubles, would allow a precise depiction of the male spirituality to appear in the figurine of Adam, thus juxtaposing the representative elements of the culture as a whole. Could it be that there was a balance of sexes in Macedonia, way before one of them claimed dominance over the other?

At only a hand-distance from civilization, on the other side of the Vodno peak, down the silent slopes from behind Skopje, where only the symbols speak their taciturn tales, Adam of Govrlevo is trying to communicate a message, as old as time itself. In the history of Arts almost all figurines from prehistory are symbolic in nature and convey a kind of philosophical viewpoint of the culture that produced them.

Adam of Macedonia was created in an epoch where the words, as we know them, would have no meaning. Everyone would agree that the explanation for Adam’s existence is at hand; however, his enigma still remains intangible to many. For the time being, we have several conflicted viewpoints of professionals in the field of archeology. If we assume that with the accentuation of the anatomy, the prehistoric inhabitants of Macedonia would leave a more significant message through Time, then we may need to reconsider the spiritual dimension of human existence.

Have you ever tried to make a human-like figurine, which would depict your complete viewpoint and your personal experience of the world as such? You would probably notice that you need a lot of love, care and attention, as well as skills to perform such a miracle. This finding is of priceless value, and has already been registered as a monumental masterpiece with an explicitly realistic art form, and can be seen at the Museum of the City of Skopje.

Events - Krusevo "Ethno City"

Welcome to my country, a living ethnological land.A lot of customs are still preserved and practicing by natives within Macedonia cities, as the way like it was centuries ago. This is a BBC broadcasts report on Krusevo "Ethno City", promoting it as tourist destination. Every year this event includes about 800 participants, dressed in traditional costumes as insurgents and Turks paraded through the town in commemoration of the anniversary of the Ilinden uprising against Ottoman rule which took place in the city of Krusevo (in macedonian Крушево) in August of 1903.

Macedonian Aqueduct, still unknown for scientist and travelers

The only Aqueduct in Republic of Macedonia (there were three aqueducts in ex-Yugoslavia) is located 2 km north-west of the city center of Skopje. One upon a time according to the notes of the traveler Evlija Chelebija (1669), the Skopje Aqueduct had 200, and now remain standing only 55 stone arches. In the disastrous earthquake which stroke Skopje in 1963, the Aqueduct was damaged and than restored and reconstructed.

According to one theory, this monument was built by the Romans, during the reign of the emperor Justinian I, who was born in the vicinity of Skopje, in a place called Tavresium. The other theory suggests it was constructed in 16th century, by the Ottoman Empire who conquered the whole Balkan (including Macedonia) and in the middle ages it provided water for public baths located now in the old part of Skopje.

Although the time of the origin is questionable, this archaeological site and magnificent cultural monument still seems like forgotten, both from the people and the Ministry of Culture. Undermined by the locals as a source of construction material and completely ruined, for decades this Aqueduct is sinking into the bogs by which it is surrounded. The pillars are filled with water and a large percentage of humidity, and there is a big possibility for permanent damage and demolition. In addition, probably the problem with the surrounding land is not yet solved, because I am not familiar whether the process of expropriation of the field which borders it has begun.

I was part of the event in 2007 when a famous ethno group Synthesis held a concert under the Aqueduct, as a contribution to its popularity. This monument is one of the hundred cultural sites which are completely abandoned and forgotten. It has never been scientifically studied and it has never been published (except in the travel catalogues). This Aqueduct is a true example of how we take care of our cultural and historical heritage in Macedonia, besides its location in the heart of the capital Skopje.

Skopje Fortress - The artifacts speak, don't they?

I haven’t been in the field since 2006. In 2007 I was working at the Skopje Fortress excavation, but I was responsible for the documentation sector, so mostly I spent my time at the computer.Three years have passed since the beginning of the excavation but unfortunately the artifacts have not been published yet. In between some of the finds were displayed in the temporary exhibition in the Museum of the city of Skopje. Actually the only visible place about the Skopje Fortress (natives call it Kale, a Turkish word for citadel) is the virtual gallery form the official web site.

On this multi-layered archaeological settlement and cultural-historical monument almost all the civilizations which inhabited the territory of Republic of Macedonia, left traces, because Macedonia has always been a geographical crossroad (both physical and spiritual) between the East and the West.

As archaeologists, unfortunately we do not observe the societies we study, do not read notes and cannot hear the stories of these people. The archaeological job is very difficult because there is no “direct” connection between the matters we study and our present time. We must establish that connection by ourselves. To create authentic stories only on the basis of material fragments which survive the time is great intellectual work, and creative interpretation of the problem that we have before us.

What can we learn from these objects? As a witness from a period of time or space which is sealed in the past, they are trying to reveal the veil of the eternal mystery they are wrapped in. This data will travel a long time, giving us information about the lives and beliefs of their owners. I invite you to browse though the gallery. You will find great stories. Maybe you will have motivation to write a story about the past. Your own, maybe?

9,800 artefacts from 18 archaeological sites are displayed in Museum of Macedonia

Currently in the Museum of Macedonia in Skopje, there is an annual exhibition where approximately 9,800 artefacts from different periods excavated at 18 archaeological sites throughout Macedonia are displayed. The exhibition includes finds from the archaeological sites of: Isar (Marvinci), Stobi (Gradsko), Heraclea Lyncestis (Bitola), Scupi (Skopje), Taor (Skopje), Stibera (Prilep), Vardarski Rid (Gevgelija), Carevi Kuli (Strumica), Vinicko Kale (Vinica), Isar (Stip), Bargala (Stip), Kozle (by Pcinja river) Tetovo Kale (Tetovo) etc …

This archaeological exhibition presents the results of archaeological excavations that were done in Macedonia during 2009. For me as an archaeologist it is a big pleasure to see all the traces left by past civilisations, which are the only witness of our past and makes the world cultural heritage patchwork. But it is a little bitter because most of these excavations stay without publishing this finds with the years, sometimes decades. It is very important for the archaeological discoveries to be publish and present in front of the public and science, because with every new finding we are changing the map of the world and our perception of the past.

In the world there is a different rule: If you find something, you have to publish immediately or you’ll be damned forever. In other words, if you don’t put yourself on the archaeological map of the world, you will be erased as you have never existed.

I saw yesterday the "Avatar". And I liked it a lot. Aside performance which looks like taken from dreamingly "children" stories, I think that the movie carries a message that it is difficult for the human race to understand. It is not easy to frame and to define this message into the movie effects, because it lies behind our tangible world. Avatar is actually all that "consciousness" to which humanity aspires. But also we should ask ourselves does it take million of dollars to spend on a movie, opposite of a technology spectacle which actually promotes anti-technological ideology?! But, the profit is immune to the absurdities.

Mostly I like the replica "I see you". It is not a physical dimension that we know. When they say "I see you" really mean to look at the soul of man, inside, and to be inspired. And to discover that the universal energy and nature are the same prototype which is buried in our conflict with the world itself. Therefore we are suffering as a species.

New book - Neolithic Societies in the Republic of Macedonia

“Neolithic Societies in the Republic of Macedonia” a joint work by young authors, archaeologists Goce Naumov, Ljubo Fidanoski, Igor Tolevski and Aneta Ivkovska was promoted in the Museum of the City of Skopje at 17th Novembre 2009.

This book includes various aspects of Neolithic societes and neolithic material culture processing large databases in order to present all segments of life in communities that have inhabited this region. Illustrated with photos and tables, plans, drawing of pottery, tools, jewelry, figurines, altars and imprints, this publication defines and presents the processes of neolitisation and social relations, as well as climate, relief, economy and visual culture manifested through agriculture, domestication, architecture, ceramics, rites and symbolic communication.

Currently I am reading few books which concerns my topic of interest. And that is in generally prehistory, paleoanthropology, lithic materials and paleolithic societies.

The first stage in studying this part of archaeology (before working in the field, or working on material) involves reading books from this topic, which are very rare in Macedonia, considering the fact that still is not allowed to purchase items via internet, amazon, ebay and etc. So, how do we think to go on a higner level when we don’t have a base? The Roman Forum at Stobi

The Roman city of Stobi in Republic of Macedonia is located on the main road that leads from the Danube to the Aegean Sea, at the place where the Erigón river (mod. River Crna) joins the Axiós river (mod. Vardar), making it important strategically as a center for both trade and warfare. The pre-Roman period comprises Stobi (near Gradsko) as an ancient town of Paionia, later conquered by Macedon. The first excavation were done from 1924 to 1936 by The Museum of Belgrade when was discovered currently the most of the visible public and private buildings including the city’s theatre, built in the third century. The most significant finds occurred between 1970 and 1980 by Yugoslav and American archaeologists.

Excavations of the ancient site of Stobi are still running. They are carried out within Archaeological and Tourist Valorization of the Ancient Town of Stobi Project funded by the Italian Foreign Ministry in collaboration with CISS NGO in Palermo and the Museum of Macedonia. The excavations in the Roman Forum started in 2003 and have shown that the Forum, a 2nd and 3rd century structure, had a monumental entrance consisting of three 7-meter high columns connceted with arcades on the top. Two new structures in service of the first one have been unearthed so far. A joint team of Macedonian and Italian archaeologists this summer have made great progress in uncovering the deeply buried Roman Forum at Stobi.

1996-2006 Looting Macedonian Archaeology

Archaeological licenses vs. Tomb raiders

The period between 1996 and 2006 in Macedonian archaeology is distinguished by two occurrences. On one hand the great increase in the number of illegal diggers at archaeological sites, and on the other the limiting of archaeologists by the requirement of special licences.

According to the current law on archaeological excavations, the excavation can be lead only by a person with a status of a high custodian or a person that has obtained a so-called archaeological licence. This is an improper application of the current law and until it is changed, a large number of young archaeologists, including myself, cannot go out in the field as leaders of an archaeological excavation because although we have university degrees and titles, the bearer of a licence to run an archaeological excavation can only be a person with the title of a high custodian or a person with adequate education that has taken an exam in front of a commission determined by the Ministry of Culture, by its own choice.

This allows room for control through a form which shows the power over archaeologists that have the adequate degrees, are qualified and thus have the right to work in their own field. The restraint on the archaeologists leaves space for illegal diggers to reign freely and their target is mainly the archaeological sites - necropolises, where the archaeological material has emerged. It is widely known that they dig in places where there are confirmed artifacts and in places they know would not be visited by archaeologists. Generally speaking, the new law on protection of the cultural heritage of Republic of Macedonia that was passed on 19th March 2004, is too liberal. It allows malefactors the freedom of movement without any consequences, and on the other hand, it is oppressive in its limiting of the rights of archaeologists.

Changes to this law are in procedure which should actually reduce or eliminate all provisions that hinder the work of archaeologists because they are the only prevention for protection of archaeological localities from illegal diggers. If there are unrestricted conditions for the archaeologists to work, then the illegal diggers could not work on the field. Or their work would be reduced to a great extent.

Letter From Macedonia (reaction)

One of the most popular online magazines about archaeology (Archaeology Magazine), in its January/February issue, carried a "Letter from Macedonia". The author, a freelance journalist, underlines several problematic points from the 1991 independence of the Republic of Macedonia, connected with archaeology as a science: our dispute with the southern neighbour about the country's name, the veto on the country's entry into NATO, franchise on the territory of the Kingdom of Ancient Macedonians, the search for identity before the ancient times thus denying Slavic identity, outdated field methodology, lack of cooperation with other countries, statements which include disastrous policy in archaeology and a tendency towards sensationalism.

Keep in mind that this is only a short abstract, and it was written and published before t he case with the fake grave of Alexander the Great and the detecting of his spirit with the help of suspicious energy entities. Macedonia was portrayed as a neverland with a fake treatment of archaeology as science, long outdated even in a lot of old systems.

I’ll be damned, but this Letter from Macedonia should have never been published, especially not in a popular journal like Archaeology Magazine. I found a lot of reactions and comments about it, some aggressive, others scientifically based. But the good point of this letter is the real absurdity of the archaeological situation in Macedonia in terms of the ties between archaeology and politics. For now I would not give any comment, except the following:

In the Republic of Macedonia there are more than 400 other archaeologists (80% of them unemployed), with the own opinions which do not reach the public, because only two or three persons give interviews and make statements on behalf of all Macedonian archaeologists. That makes us even more incompetent than we really are, because the truth is that Macedonian archaeology is currently like a crystal shoe. Or to be more precise, a crystal high heel. And an antique one, on top.

At the moment, I am ashamed to be a Macedonian archaeologist. I will go find a place to hide , to cover my head and throw away my degree in archaeology.

The spirits, the graves and the rest of the best

There's this website [SR] that all bloggers know it's a fake one. Its only purpose is entertainment: on this website anyone can produce a news story and distribute it as a real one, e.g. as an April Fool's Day joke for their friends. But the latest events have really hit the rock bottom of Macedonian media space. Namely, this very website ran the news story, with all the typos and poor grammar in the Serbian text, with invented toponyms and archaeological faux-pas, of the discovery of the grave of Alexander the Great [SR]. In addition to the fact that somebody tricked the public for unknown reasons, the biggest of all is that all serious mainstream media in Macedonia fell for that. If there is a media outlet that could be called 'serious'.

We live in an age where control of information seems enormous. New media are a double-edged sword and one should be extremely careful when it comes to speculations. We mustn't forget that they are a free tool accessible to everyone. Thus, at any given moment anyone can consume, but also 'produce' information. Control of the information flow, coming from so many different sources, becomes impossible. We live in a time when everyone is making or writing their own history. Give me 2-3 pieces of information, and I'll construct any archaeological truth that you want [MKD].

In order for everything to be in the spirit of our antiquisation, another ridiculous news story appeared in the media the other day, as a good marketing ploy for the historian Donski and his latest book. Namely, last year he apparently visited a psychic in the US, and at that spiritual seance the ghost of Alexander the Great appeared as his ancestor [MKD]. The ghost was speaking in a 'comprehensible' language [MKD] and told everything, except the location of his grave. Such a pity, we could've really found it.

First and foremost, any information must be checked with at least three independent sources. Good God, even I—a non journalist—know that. It is nebulous to distribute news about anything connected to archeology without going in the field, even about the tomb and the spirit of Alexander of Macedon in person. Unless one checks all the options and removes even a shadow of doubt, the scientific public should be spared of such turbulent, emotionally charged media observations.

I suppose that the historians and the archeologists will continue to keep mum about these events [MKD], just like they kept silent about the world's first hamburger, the Copper Book, the Hunza and the Kalash, the Rosetta Stone affair, etc. There's nothing worse than such silence and ignoring, because it implies silent approval of such hypotheses and theories. We as society slowly move closer to the axiom “that the land has always been ours,” aiming to provide an united and monolithic view of a historical walkabout from the Paleolithic to Tito, even though some of the episodes are not quite “safe” and lead to the above mentioned failures of reason.

The view that history is a science based on immaculate myths, lacking elements that would contradict the fragile “officially ours Macedonian evolutionist schema” deserves criticism. We do not need to lie [MKD] – the truth is enough, no matter what it is. In spite of the fact that the same tendency spans from Greece to Sweden – recent research showed that national myths of all European countries are almost identical [MKD]. Dissemination of such trivial information provides a fake image to the world about strengthening of our identity (esp. the ancient Macedonian part), while lacking the scientific approach, published scientific papers and documented archeological findings. I really can't see why we should use a technique of self-identification through denial [MKD] to confirm any type of identity.

To conclude, I think that the Macedonian journalists covering culture, and especially the topic of history->identity should get more education about archeology as a science which deals with societies of the past, not the present. I for one would speak at such a seminar or a workshop. If need be, pro bono. :-)

Archaeological map of The Republic of Macedonia vs. Internet access

I deliberately chose 1996, due to a number of reasons, of which are most important:

- The definite independence of Macedonian archaeology after the disintegration and the war in former Yugoslavia.
- Publishing of the Archaeological Map of The Republic of Macedonia in Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts edition
- The global expansion of the Internet.

The Archaeological Map of The Republic of Macedonia is a project that has been ongoing for 20 years and which provides basic information about the archaeological sites on the territory of R. Macedonia. One of the more significant remarks (not criticism) that can be made about this three-volume edition is the determination of a space, or should I say place as an archaeological site only on the basis of a few surface findings. Even the unlicensed excavators rarely use this Archaeological Map because the information contained there is general in character and determines a location according to the surface note, as for example, a settlement with architecture.

While Macedonian archaeologists were preparing the Archaeological Map of Macedonia for years so that at the date of its publication some of the data was more than 20 years obsolete, at the same time Greece was buying the macedonia.com domain on the Internet. For more than ten years, the Greek non-profitable organisation “Pan European Network” has been the owner of the Macedonia.com domain. On its website this organisation presents itself as an official web server for Macedonia and offers information about history, sport, tourism, and everyday life in Greece.

Currently, this is a very big problem because if you type the tags Macedonia + archaeology in a search box, the search engine will return thousands of web sites, most of them Greek, Bulgarian or Albanian propaganda denying our past, culture and language. The problem with the “illegal” registration of a country name is not just the case with our country. But taking care of our cultural heritage on the internet is. Still, not a single institution in Macedonia cares about the promotion and protection of our name and heritage on the Internet.

Archaeological diary - my first book is now available online

Dimitrovska Vasilka – Arwena, one of the most popular Macedonian bloggers and the only archaeologist from Macedonia who actually writes on the internet, published her first collection of texts “Archaeological diary” in electronic form, under a Creative Commons license.

The collection, having the same title as the blog of Arwena, consists of a selection of posts written online , that are not completely reflecting her own opinion, since priority is given to scientific-popular texts.

“I believe that all these years, I managed not to be a replica of the Macedonian newspapers and everyday events. Arwena’s blog is one of the rare thematic blogs in Macedonian, that are also quality blogs, popular and attractive, with scientific texts supported by facts, critiques, analyses and positions that, in her case, are licensed under the Creative Commons license since she began with blogging.

Contents published on this blog are grouped in several categories, but generally, they are comprised by two segments: the first of which is archaeology (in general, but also in view of the current developments in this field in Macedonia), and the second – the sharing of personal experiences from the author’s own carrier.

Transitional archaeology in a Transitional Country (1)

I will use this article as a basis for providing a brief overview of Macedonian archaeology and its dynamics between 1986 and 2006. The longer version of this paper was presented on 13th Annual Meeting of EAA held in Zadar, Croatia.

1986-2006

The archaeological politics of the Republic of Macedonia during the period of coexistence as part of ex-Yugoslavia displays few common features:

* The Government (Ministry of Culture) is funding the excavations
* The Museums and Institutions for protection of the excavating of the cultural heritage
* They only excavate necropolises

Excavations on the territory of Macedonia, 20 years ago as well as today, are mainly (90%) undertaken with funding provided by the Ministry of Culture. This tendency is starting to change in the past couple of years, by seeking other possibilities out of this sphere, but the fact remains that the Government is the major sponsor, so to speak, of every type of archaeological excavation in Macedonia.

Research is exclusively performed by the Museums of Republic of Macedonia as well as the Institutes for Protection of Cultural Monuments. But this research is limited due to several factors. The Museums, trying to enrich their collections with artefacts, prefer necropolis excavations, because every attempt to research a settlement, for example, would involve long-term physical planning for which they lack both the financial resources and the qualified staff.

The most frequent form of such excavations is protective excavations. Provoked by the dangers to the locality for various reasons, they are not different from any other type of excavation neither in their objectives nor in the character of the methodology of the archaeological work.

That is their legal interpretation, since they result from funding intended for research of a space marked for investment construction (roads, bridges, buildings, railway lines, etc.), because the main purpose of the research is to give an investor a building permit.

These protective excavations are limited to a small space of a methodological character that is mainly performed by probes (I want to emphasize this) and is without exception almost always vertical. The absence of a horizontal stratigraphy in the excavations of an archaeological locality (a settlement for example) and the funding that does not allow physical planning of the excavation results in serious effects on the later results that are not complete due to the fact that they are limited and do not involve methods of systematic researches.

The conclusion of the politics of the archaeological excavations in Macedonia towards the end of the 1980's and the middle 1990's is that there is not a systematic and long-term research of a larger space that would be covered by a horizontal stratigraphy. This remains a problem today.

From transition to antiquization, and beyond

Besides such formal conflicts between self-contained individual classical works, there were cases of outward clashes between an invading aggressive classical manner and inherent, existing regional idioms of design. This was repeatedly the case with a type of urban renewal that historian have called antiquisation.

Antiquisation is a term coined by architectural historians to refer to the Renaissance practice of giving a city the appearance of ancient Rome or Athens through the introductions of structures organized in the classical mode. These were occasionally temporary, as in the case of the “cérémonies à l’antique” – public events of a political content – but more frequently permanent. This phenomenon became visible in Rome and Florence and in the other major Italian towns around the fifteenth century and spread through the cities of the north – Lyon, Paris, Antwerp and London – throughout all the world, up to our times.

Miyata - Postojam (I exist)

Да не се заборави кои сме, што сме и од каде сме.

Since its official release, the video of the single "Postojam" (I exist) by the pop rock singer Miyatta received wide media coverage and it is a topic of discussion among the Macedonian population all around the world. Interest for the English translation of the lyrics and releasing it abroad has also been shown. Regardless of the context, the video became something worth a comment. Those who were familiar with that part of Macedonia's history congratulated Miyatta for delivering this audio-visual expression. Those who see such pictures for the first time, think that it is too painful to be true. Some believe that this is just an attempt of attention seeking. All kinds of positive and negative comments are yet to be heard. I am happy that the number of people who were indifferent towards "Postojam" is rather small.

Images of sorrow and exile on one hand, and images of unity and pride on the other make a rather authentic representation of Macedonia.

The past is not to be revived, but to be outgrown.

Let us outgrow it, but first,

In the vicinity of Prilep, on the archaeological site ,,Markovi Kuli", there are rock paintings with unknown origin. Some of the oral sources say they are prehistoric, other ones they belong to the medieval ages, but none of this is a proof to which period they belong especially because the archaeological excavation has not be done yet.

Unfortunately in Republic of Macedonia currently there is no any archaeologist or historian of art having rock paintings as a primary topic for his/her investigations.

It does not matter if these rock paintings have prehistoric or medieval roots. The most important is how to protect them from vandalizing (mostly with recent graffiti inscriptions), because they can be a very good source for a lot of other sciences including history of art, ethnology, anthropology etc...

Carnival for the Day of Forgiveness (Prochka) in Prilep

Last time when I was at the Carnival for the Day of Forgiveness (Prochka) in Prilep, it was at least seven or eight years ago. Nothing has been changed from then until today. Оn the contrary, the carnival has become more and more popular and this year has its international day as a beginning of the fiesta. All the participants in the Carnival wear authentic and cognizable masks during the celebration, which derives from their regions. They are masked as wizards, doctors, politicians, some other trivial figures and characters from fairy tales. But the most popular among them, so called Prilep Bear Keepers (Prilepskite mechkari), are constant target for making pictures and ethnological documentaries.

The Day of Forgiveness according to the Orthodox Church is a feast which precedes the Honorable Fast Season (Great Lent), the greatest fasting period which prepares all Christians for the greatest feast of the church year, Easter.

The ancient Greeks and Romans are dead, but I would not say that about their deeds. From the literary works and scientific terms used today in all the European languages, this Greco-Roman spiritual and material culture is more alive than ever. Right in the moment when everybody are searching something about their roots and origins. Except the traces of this culture (like architecture, sculpture, paintings, etc.) which can be seen at every step on the whole Balkan territory, this classical culture also can be found in our folklore.

I am writing this blog-post specially to promote the Systasis, a web site of the on-line, electronic, periodical journal, initiated and edited by the members of the Association of Classical Philologists Antika in Skopje, Macedonia.

Beside the journal ,,Live Antique" (Živa Antika), I would say that Systasis is the only place where the scientific works and articles offered by specialists in the fields of classical philology, history, archeology, philosophy, can be found. Especially those who work in the fields of Ancient Greece and Rome and the cultural and historical heritage of these civilizations in Republic of Macedonia. Also the Journal welcomes contributions in the field of didactics of classical disciplines, as well as contributions by younger students at the Institutes of Classics and wider.

Systasis has an English version of its web site which is very important due to the fact that everybody concerned about these topics could follow the argumentation of the interesting studies published here.

In the absence of the on-line scientific works which derives form Republic of Macedonia, the idea of available articles about classical philology is really noble and there is always necessity of promotion. In the Internet era, still there is a small number of the on- line available scientific articles from all other sciences in Macedonia, including archaeology, which by not publishing the scientific works at the moment is brought to the margins of its exhaustion and at the edge of survival.

The Stone Roses from Macedonia

These are one of the most beautifully stalactites in Republic of Macedonia, so called Stone rose. They belong to the interior of cave Alilica, village Tresonche, Western Macedonia.

Searching and exploring caves was my hobby even before the time I studied archeology, and now is a part of my profession. This cave is located about 40-60 min. walking along the canyon of Tresonechka river and the entrance is just under few beautiful springs. Actually, this is a two cave opening system which consist of Upper and Down Alilica. They are connected with a vertical sloping canal and it is recommended that if you don`t have an experience, make your first visit with specialized guides, speleologists or alpinists, because the entrance into the cave is vertical and deep more than 20 m.

The lenght of the cave Down Alilica is approximately 600 m. This is a space rich with beautifull stalactites, stalagmites, a small river dividing the main hall on a two parts finishing with a waterfall inside the cave and small lakes. The figures on the walls in the interior presents a small animal kingdom inside the cave. Some of them actually look like elephants.

The most beautiful sunset in the world

While I was sitting with my colleague on coffe after the hard day, I just ran to the beach to make a photo of the sunset in Zadar, one of the most special by thinking of many people. When I arrived at home, I saw what I`ve done. Because I am not an expert of digital photography, I didn`t set up the camera, or work on the photo later in Photoshop.

Excavation of Skopje Fortress - summer 2007 - Macedonia (releasing the web site)

As I already said in one previous post, the excavation of Skopje Fortress began on 14-May-2007. In that time I was in Slovenia and I joined the team two weeks after the beginning of the biggest excavation ever done in Republic of Macedonia, in which more than 250 people are included.

This project is financed by the Government of Republic of Macedonia with a total amount of 2 million Euro, which basically should cover the main goal of the project - researching, rehabilitating, preserving, restoring and presenting the fortification walls and some of the fortress towers.

Skopje Fortress is located in the centre of Skopje, in the capital of Macedonia. From the beginning it was an open public excavation, and releasing a web page was just a question of time. The coordinator of this project Ph. D. Dragi Mitrevski was aware that with the opening of the web page the copy rights of the researchers will be endanger. But according to my opinion, still there are higher purposes in human life, and some of them are concerning the fact that the ordinary people and public need to be informed about all the discoveries during the excavation.

Moment from discovering of the bowl in Sector 3

I have many articles about Macedonian archaeology (mostly in Macedonian) and I will keep writing about. As someone who is directly involved in this excavation and as a colaborator of the official web site, I could write an article which is thousand times better from the best journalist article. Still, my decision was that it is better the public to be informed via relevant source like media and of course the official web site of Skopje Fortress. This web site was released long time ago, only two month after the beginning of the excavation, but from above mentioned reasons I chose to post this information now.

Eneolithic house and finds from prehistory in Sector 7

After Vardarski Rid this is probably for the first time in Republic of Macedonia one archaeological site during the excavation to has its own internet page which is treated as an affirmative contribution to the archaeology. My colleges and I in this moment with our hands we’re digging the culture heritage of Republic of Macedonia creating the archaeological picture of one country in the present, that will serve as a base of collective memory for the future generations.

Of course, this is an archaeological joke from the time when I was a student. We`re jocking about the problems that humanity was having with the global warming, but ten years latter - we are facing much bigger problem. It is a fact that during the milenia, people affected the climate and today it may have efects on lots of items, including here world's cultural heritage, too.

“Synthesis” with Concerts at Antique Sites

Synthesis

Renowned Macedonian ethno-band “Synthesis” begins Saturday a series of eight concerts, which will be held at famous antique sites throughout the country. Skopje Aqueduct hosts this week’s concert, beginning at 13,00h.
“The idea of this project is to support tradition, wish and determination to affirm these wonderful places, which are a bit forgotten”, says Vladimir Mandicevski of “Bagi Communications”, which are “Synthesis” managers.
All concerts will be open and free of charge. The gigs will last between 40 minutes and one hour, including songs from the old repertoire, as well as several new compositions of the album in preparation.
The concerts in the next eight Saturdays will be held in Strumin Grob (Strumica), Cifte Amam (Skopje), Isar (Stip), Herakleja (Bitola), Matka (Skopje), Vitolista, Mariovo (Prilep) and Stobi (Veles).

Archaeologists Start Exploring Skopje Kale

Long announced archaeological excavations on the Skopje Fortress, Kale started yesterday and the area oozing with the spirit of spring was covered by teams of archaeologists in the country and archaeology students. The project was initiated and has been funded with 2 million euros by the current government which is interested in effectuating the main area in town, says Prof. Dragi Mitrevski. “Skopje Kale is now in function of the existing restaurant there and the goal of effectuating the values it posses will be accomplished when the parking lot is full of tourist buses, not only wedding ones.” Mitevski is expecting the two-year exploration work to present at least 10 percent of the archaeological values hidden in the ancient area.

As previous archaeological excavations, this one is also based not only on the archaeological evidence discovered but rich historical evidence and sources. “There is detailed evidence from the Middle Ages, the Ottoman period, there are many written sources and photographs of the Kale. We should define the beginning of life in this area, because archaeological evidence so far is much comprehensive. The oldest records should date from the Bronze Age. Also, this site offered settling opportunities in all the metal periods. We have certain evidence dated from the Iron Ages and early antiquity, from the Early Byzantine period. There is no evidence on the Roman Age because Skupi was the centre at the time, and marble blocks were brought from there and embedded in the Kale walls. So far, the walls are the main element where different constructing techniques and different material originating from different periods are recorded. Our task is to verify the periods with cultural layers,” Mitrevski, the head of the excavations said.

“We need remains of the tangible culture to connect the walls. I expect the fortress to be an area where a lot can be seen and learnt because the cultural values of the Skopje area are here.”
Archaeologists from different institutions in the country who head certain sectors are involved in the project including Kire Ristov, Ljubinka Dzidrova,Branislav Ristevski, Marijan Jovanov, Antonio Jakimovski, Sanja Jovanova, Silvana Blazevska, Zlatko Videvski, Strahil Temov etc.

Reconstruction of neolithic house from Govrlevo-Macedonia

The archaeological site of Cerje, near to village Govrlevo (in the vicinity of Skopje, Macedonia) is dated from early neolithic to the begining of bronze age. This video clip is representiing a reconstruction of neolithic house from this multi layer site, considering the fact that Neolithic living houses were made of stone and wood which is proved with edvidence on the field.

Exclusive archaeological finds from ancient carriage, Macedonia

Eighteen months ago were found and confiscated (from tomb riders) exclusive finds and parts of ancient carriage from the tomb which is located in the vicinity of village Mogila, Delchevo (Macedonia). Nobody can say why the archaeological excavations are stopped, the site is under protection of police, and in the meanwhile there are no further excavations.

Considering the fact that public should wait for a long to see this finds published in a book, I made a brief slide show with those artefacts based on images Kanal 5 TV report obtained thanks to Volan.

,Antique Population from Marvinci-Valandovo” - new monograph

,,Antique Population from Marvinci-Valandovo” is the fifth monograph by anthropologist Fanica Veljanovska, employed in The Museum of Macedonia. According to her, in this book are presented:

,,The results of the researched skeletons of people from the necropolis at site Marvinci, which date from several historic periods (4th century B.C. to 4th century A.D.). An anthropological reconstruction of 182 skeletons has been conducted, with determination of the people’s characteristics, their physical appearance, mortality and average lifespan, diseases and injuries. The research on the way people were buried reveals their social status. Most of them were part of the middle class, while a small number belonged to the very rich or poor. Women were buried with less items than men, which points to the fact they had a marginalized status.Fanica Veljanovska has already published five monographs and over 30 texts on this problematic. Her next target is to research Dunje near Prilep, followed by Stobi.

PhD.Fanica Veljanovska in 2004 was an author of an very interesting exhibition, named as ,,Man in the past", which was followed with interactive multimedia CD-ROM. In that time I din`t have a blog, but now I have unlimited possibilities. I made a brief slide show with the photographs of this exhibition.

Exhibition “Heraklea – Pearl of Antiquity” Opens

An exhibition, “Heraklea – Pearl of Antiquity” opened at the premises of Magaza gallery in Bitola yesterday. The show is organized by the National Institution, Institute and Museum Bitola.
”Bitola is the pioneer because an exhibition of pictures of archaeological sites is organized for the first time. Usually, we make such presentations with the exhibits themselves upon consideration that 3D objects attract greater attention,” Pasko Kuzman, Director of the Directorate for Protection of Monuments and Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Macedonia said at the opening ceremony. “Heraklea Lynkestis, the town of Heracles and Philip II shows us proudly that it is one important segment of the identity to which we belong today and therefore, this piquant setting enables us to penetrate imaginatively the eternity and return to the world of reality.”
The exhibition was first organized in Sofia.

Archaeologists about to Come to Sensational Finding – Walls of Antigonea Unearthed

Massive 100-meter long walls, at places two meters thick, have made archaeologists to believe that they are about to come to a sensational finding – the venue of the ancient town of Antigonea, thir century BC. They say that ethics still does not allow them to definitely state the discovery until they find a written proof that Antigonea was located in the place of Gradiste near Negotino, along the Vardar River. Still, according to the findings so far – the walls, ceramics, glass items, jewellery and coins, they probably found themselves in front of the town walls last summer.

Archaeologists of the Museum in Negotino and the Museum of Macedonia worked on the site above a hill at 300 meters above the sea level between early august and late September. The purpose of the excavations were the walls on the west and south sides of the hill, which are visible from the road leading to Negotino.

“We found 100 meters of the wall. The older part of stone and mud were erected in the Hellenic period, and the upper layers were up-built under the Romans when they attached the stones with mortar, archaeologists Kiro Angelovski, custodian counsellor at the Museum in Negotino and head of the excavations says.

Older layers have yet to be discovered. Archaeologists have not braved to lower the level of earth fearing ruining of the massive walls. So far, the walls are the most sizable indicator that Antigonea was located at Gradiste in Negotinio. The archaeologists support this thesis with many findings at the “economic” facility near the hill where the suburban part of the ancient town was located.

Shields of a Macedonian King Revealed in Prilep Village

Parts of Bronze shields 2,200 years old, which belonged to the ancient Macedonian soldiers, have been found in village Bonce near Prilep. This exceptional revelation has stirred experts from the Prilep Bureau and Museum because these are unique findings with exceptional scientific and historic value, confirming the spanning of the antique Macedonian state in these areas, as well as the Macedonian identity, says archaeologist Dusko Temelkoski.

The shields’ value is even greater, because they bear the name of Macedonian king Demetrius, one of the heirs of Alexander of Macedonia, stresses Temelkovski, adding that such shields were used in parades by the guard of king Demetrius.

Artifacts from Macedonian Sites Seized in Slovenia Return to Macedonia

(MIA, 20.10.2006) - A total of 190 items of Macedonian cultural heritage, which two men from Strumica excavated from archaeological sites in the country’s southeast, have been returned from Slovenia.
The items were seized in March 2005 at the Croatian-Slovenian border in a bus, intended for the German market.

Текстот за Архео-филателија ми беше напишан уште одамна. Пробав да го постирам, но не ми успеваше заради одредени технички проблеми кои во тоа време ги имаше Блогерајов. Поради тоа целосната верзија беше поместена на блогер, а парцијално на Блогерај, поради гореспоменатите проблеми. Кога бев запрашана зошто го постирам реков: ,, не е лошо луѓето да се подсетат, со тоа што јас давам само краток осврт на македонската филателија и елементите од културата која таа ги има употребено на своите поштенски марки". Кога се средија сите проблеми, во меѓувреме текстот доживеа и репринт.

По два месеца прочитав во Шпиц статија дека во Музеј на град Скопје има изложба на тема ,,Богатството низ поштенски марки" каде се изложени - Културното и природното богатство на Македонија преку поштенските марки.

Па добро бе луѓе се има ли усул кога се краде? Постои ли начин и покрај сите овие лиценци демек за заштита на авторските права - да се заштитат и блогерите од крадење на идеи? А? Постои ли начин блогерите да бидат заштитени????

Peru's famed "Ice Maiden," the frozen mummy of an Inca girl sacrificed to the gods 500 years ago, might be at risk from humidity, Peru's leading newspaper reported Wednesday.

Dampness was detected inside the mummy's glass-enclosed refrigeration compartment by an expert from the U.S. Smithsonian Institution who was vacationing in the southern Andean city of Arequipa, where the mummy is kept, daily newspaper El Comercio reported.

Teodoro Nunez Medina, Arequipa's regional director of Peru's National Institute of Culture, told the newspaper that the unnamed expert notified Peruvian authorities that the mummy could deteriorate beyond repair within five years if the problem is not corrected.

Dig unearths round table evidence at Windsor Castle

Evidence of a building linked to the myth of King Arthur and the knights of the round table has been found at Windsor Castle.

The circular structure was built by Edward III in the 14th century to house the round table intended to seat the original 300 Knights of the Garter. Archaeological proof of the building was uncovered by members of Channel 4's Time Team in the castle's quadrangle.

Although the stones have been removed, rubble in-fill where they were originally located remained in place. The show's presenter, Tony Robinson, said the discovery could help settle years of debate among historians over the existence of the building. "The round table building is one of our most significant ever archaeological finds. It is something that helped to establish Arthurian legends of the knights of the round table.

Hadrian's Roman soldiers 'had military tattoo'

A pictorial exhibition exploring the history of tattooing in Britain is to go on display in the unlikely setting of Newcastle University's Museum of Antiquities (Tuesday 29 August).

Currently fashionable among celebrities, footballers and pop stars, historical texts and archaeological evidence suggest that some form of tattooing has been practised in the British Isles for thousands of years.

'It's a little known fact, but it would appear that all of the legionaries and some of the auxiliaries on Hadrian's Wall would have had a tattoo', says the University's Director of Archaeological Museums and Roman expert, Lindsay Allason-Jones.

The birthplace of Augustus

Archaeologist Clementina Panella says that she is not certain, but she may have discovered the birthplace of Augustus, first emperor of Rome. She has dug up "a very ancient aristocratic house" on the Palatine Hill.
A team of archaeologists announced Wednesday they have uncovered part of what they believe is the birthplace of Rome's first emperor Augustus.

Leading archaeologist Clementina Panella said the team has dug up part of a corridor and other fragments under Rome's Palatine Hill, which she described as "a very ancient aristocratic house."

Museums show archaeological and historical wealth of Turkey

According to the Culture and Tourism Ministry, museums in Turkey house 1,658,275 coins; 688,032 archaeological and 290,573 ethnographical artifacts; 118,005 tablets; 24,885 manuscripts; and 23,894 seals and seal stamps, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign visitors

The museums of a country are probably the most distinctive signs of the importance that country attaches to culture and history. It can also be said the amount of interest shown in museums depends on how capable they are of presenting the cultural and archaeological wealth of a country.

However, Turkey's museums recently came to the agenda due to an unfortunate event -- the theft and replacement by fakes of pieces from the Karun Treasure on display in Uşak Archaeology Museum. Turkey possesses a large number of museums housing its centuries-old cultural heritage.

A total of 2,815,470 pieces are currently on display in 92 museums under the auspices of the Culture and Tourism Ministry, according to the ministry's data.

The cultural wealth of Anatolia, host of numerous civilizations throughout history, is attracting many visitors, especially foreign tourists.

Çatalhöyük excavations unveil very dawn of human civilization

A total of 130 houses have been unearthed to date during excavations at the 9,000-year-old site of Çatalhöyük in Konya's Çumra district, excavation assistant team leader Shahina Farid has said.

The first excavations at the site -- considered one of the oldest settlements in the history of mankind, dating back to the Neolithic Age -- were conducted by British archaeologist James Mellart, who uncovered 80 houses during excavations between 1961-1964, according to the Anatolia news agency.

Work at the site resumed in 1993 after a long hiatus.

�Fifty new houses have been uncovered since that date," said Farid. "We are trying to shed light on an obscure period of mankind through these excavations. The excavation findings reveal that there was a river and small lakes in the region 9,000 years ago. We also found buildings were located one above the other. The oldest houses were destroyed after a period of habitation and new structures were built over them. These structures consist of two rooms and a larder. We assume that Çatalhöyük housed a population of around 7,000-10,000 at that time.�

Мојот последен пост го избришав бидејќи не оствив опција за коментирање, и моето право како корисник беше прекршено. И тоа токму од оние кои треба да го заштитат тоа право на корисниците.

Јас замолив на најљубезен начин, а Блогмастерот ми одговори на најглпуавиот можен. Да видеше вчера блогмастерот кај мене во администрација, полето за пораките не постоеше, и ете оп денеска мистериозно се појави.

Се знае зошто служи еден блог и кому тоа служи. Кога некој има блог, тоа значи дека е негов, лично негов и само газдата може да прави на него што сака. Со самото тоа што блогерајот ги пуштил блоговите во оптицај, се оттуѓил од нив. Негово е само да ги оддржува. И постои заради давање на соодветна поддршка и токму заради овакви мали или големи киксови.

Корисниците можат да реагираат како сакаат и предходно сум рекка, а се знае како треба да реагира Блогмастерот. Самим тим тука не требаше да има никакви чувства и бидејќи се сметам за навредена со искажаните зборови, БАРАМ ЈАВНО ИЗВИНУВАЊЕ.

а после ова навистина ја исклучувам опцијата за примање приватни пораки.

Кај мене вчера вечер не постоеше опција за исклучување на ПП не знам зошто и не е мој проблем туку на оној кој го одржува блогерајот. А со тоа што не сум оставила опција за коментирање на постот, како да не му е јасно дека тоа се однесува и на него.

Корисник како корисник може да реагира како сака, ама не и Блогмастер, посебно не со навредливи реченици. Можам тек да замислам да нападнав или со нешто погрди зборови што ќе се случеше.

Ова не е по дома, ова е нет и блогерај, тој е Блогмастер, админ на една блогплатформа и се знае што му е работа. Се знае што е работа на еден корисник а што на еден Блогмастер.

Што е Касандра?

Касандра е:

- синдром во психологијата
- составен дел од соѕвездие
- проколната пророчица од древната грчката религија
- вториот крак на полуостровот Халкидики
- лик од Хајхлендер
- град во Пенсливанија

- разно

Но Касандра е мит и тоа современ. А митот кој ни наметна одредени стандарди и двојни аршини доаѓа од латинскиот дел на Америка. Овој мит успеа да ги урне сите јазични бариери и овозможи еден досега "заспан" дел од светот да исплива на површина со својата култура и традиција. Мит кој заработи толку многу пари што Холивудските студија почнаа да партиципираат во него со крај цел. Уште поголема заработувачка.

Овој мит ни продава љубов, музика и една филозофија од теле новелите каде ( како што вели Бубу) имате воглавном сиромашна, но убава девојка која се мажи за богат човек. Тука е нејзината свекрва (и уште по некој член од злобната фамилија). Само Бубу, те молам си го заборавила најважниот елемент од шпанските серии (а воедно и најветиот)- свештеникот. Немој друг пат да шириш оваква ерес.

Наместо да пишувам цел ферман од коментар кај Оксиморон на темата за Платон, идеите и блогерајов, решив дека е подобра "идејата" да ја линкам и воедно да кажам што мислам.

До некаде се сложувам со мислењето на Платон за светот на идеите, бидејќи идеите иако во својата срж според него се со еден безвременски облик и вечни, токму блогерајот покажува колку се всушност тие менливи и варијабилни.

Платон не предвидел само едно нешто. Можеби и го предвидел ама не го кажал. Светот е создаден од идеи. Идеите се создадени од мисли, а најбрзо нешто што може човек да промени кај себе........ е мислата. Значи следствено на тоа и идеите се брзо менлива и флуидна категорија и ниту една не е глупа, проста и безначајна.

Една мисла прави имиџ, а имиџот блогери мои..е него со пари и да сакате, не можете да го купите. Бар не овдека . ;)

A да и големата мудрост доаѓа на крај

Ако најбрзо нешто што човекот може да промени на себе е мислата...

Одделни изрази употребени во Законот за заштита на културното наследство го имаат следново значење:

Уште на почетокот ви кажувам дека овој мој поглед не представува релативизирање на работите, туку чисто објективно научно археолошко гледиште, намерно лишено од секаков вид на емоции...

Да претпоставиме дека со помош на Автостоперкиот водич доаѓа турист на Земјата. Да претпоставиме и тоа дека дека ова суштество е разумно, ама лишено од можноста да се разбере со нас. Што тој ќе дознае ако посака да го спознае духот на европската религија, проучувајки ги црквите. Ќе види јагне, магаре и вол, како и огромно количество на измачени, камшикувани или ранети ликови. Каква ли идеја ќе си створи за христијанската религија и мисла?

Ајде од почеток. Да кажеме дека овој наш ѕвезден патник сепак одлучил да остане уште малку и да ги проучи црквите. Ако се задесил при држење на миса или литургија, сигурно приметил дека сите христијани прават чудни стеротипни обичаи околу-наоколу веќе со илјадници години, без било каков смисол, и ги завршуваат со ритуалот каде се јаде парче на леб. Она кое прво ќе му падне на памет е дека се работи за некој магиски елемент во нивното верување чија цел е веројатно да се осигура подобро житородие.

Да отидеме понатаму и да го замислиме нашиот патник како ја проучува внатрешноста на црквата. Да претпоставиме дека имал доволно трпение да проучи дваесет или стотина цркви. Ќе востанови дека:

- градбите се секогаш свртени во ист правец
- деловите им се горе-доле константни
- постојат повеќе предмети кои покажуваат еден човек распнат на крст
- тој истиот човек може да се види на многу слики вдолж ѕидовите, во различни ситуации и опкружен со различни физиономии
- овие материјални сведоштва одговараат на еден поврзан систем каде крстот и сликите се цврсто зададена тема.

Дали тој воопшто може да си ја претпостави врската помеѓу обредот на јадење парче леб и распнатиот човек?

Лишен да разговара со интелектуалец од прв ранг без фелер, дали овој наш патник би можел да ги реконструира христијанската мисла и Евангелие, за да на крај дојде до заклучокот дека позади тие неразбирливи сведоштва стои некое повисоко симболичко значење? Од целиот направен инвентар, неговата реконструкција за религијата на христијаните би била зачудувачки неточна (а и како не би била) и веројатно ќе одговара на заклучокот дека овие луѓе имаат добро разработена космогонија и прилично развиени поими за промените на животот и смртта.

Сликата која се добива на овој начин ќе се сложите дека е сосема поинаква од онаа која ние ја познаваме, но сепак содржи дел од вистината до која е дојдено по еден сосема мејнстрим пат. Археологот пред фактот за религиозното верување се наоѓа во иста положба како овој наш разумен патник кој се истоварил на Земјата, а му е непознат верскиот феномен кај човекот. Можеби оваа логика ќе ви се причини апсурдна, НО..

Секое седиште има сопствено гледиште и објективноста во археологијата е предност, а не предизвик.

По трагите на Леонардо

Кодот на да Винчи пробиен?

Дали се дешифрира кодот на да Винчи? Дали се открива тајната шифра? Дали се тргнува по трагите на Леонардо?

Чекор по чекор многу стрпливо, во стилот на детектив од филмот Кодот на да Винчи...еден човек се доближува до мистеријата на Леонардо, следејќи ги трагите кои можат да го доведат до откривање на ремек делото изгубено повеке од четири и пол векови. Тој верува дека е скриено во собата која била центар на политичките случувања во Средниот век, во Фиренца.

За делото на Леонардо да Винчи кое последен пат е видено 1563 година, се знае исклучиво од копии кои ги направиле неговите современици, како и подоцнежни автори. За историчарите на уметноста да се најде изгубеното дело на Леонардо насловено како Battle of Anghiari, е во истиот ранг како кога би се нашле артефактите од Титаник или уште подобро гробот на Египетскиот архитект- Имхотеп.

Maurizio Seracini, светски познат стручњак во областа на ликовната уметност, верува дека ова дело е скриено позади фреската на Џорџо Васари во Sala del Gran Consiglio, домот на Италијанскиот “Louvre” — галеријата Uffizi.

Технологијата на праисторискиот човек

УТРЕВЕЧЕР ВО МУЗЕЈОТ НА МАКЕДОНИЈА, ПОСТАВКАТА КОЈА Е ГОСТУВАЊЕ ОД ХРВАТСКА, ЌЕ ЈА ОТВОРИ АМБАСАДОРОТ ИВО КУЈУНЏИЌ

Како се развивале технологиите од најстарите палеолитски периоди? Како еволуирал човековиот род со промените кои настануваат со употребата на глината, а подоцна и на металот? Како ги изработувал праисторискиот човек своите алатки од камен? Одговорите на овие интересни прашања ќе може да ги пронајдеме на изложбата "Почетоците на технологијата", која утревечер ќе биде отворена во Музејот на Македонија. Оваа поставка доаѓа од Археолошкиот музеј од Загреб, Хрватска и е возвратна посета на изложбата "Македонските бронзи", којашто беше презентирана во Загреб, изминатата година.
На изложбата, која ќе ја отвори хрватскиот амбасадор во Македонија, Иво Кујунџиќ, ќе бидат презентирани артефакти и фотографии од најстарите праисториски периоди. Акцент е ставен на старото камено време, односно на почетоците на животот на човекот на нашата планета.

"Ова е прва изложба од ваков вид кај нас. Освен обичната публика, многу е интересна и за научната јавност и за студентите бидејќи има едукативен карактер и може да се видат различни важни периоди од развојот на човештвото", вели Љиљана Шаламанов-Коробар, виш кустос за старо камено време. Таа додава дека Хрватска е земја со богата традиција за археолошки ископувања и истражувања, и тоа од крајот на 19 век, нешто што кај нас почна подоцна.

Публиката ќе се забавува и со краток филм, на кој ќе биде демонстрирана изработка на камени алатки. Заедничката иницијатива финансиски е поддржана од нашето Министерство за култура и од Службата за образование, култура и спорт од Загреб.

Тифани во Далас

Во првиот електронски часопис за уметност воопшто излезен на Интернет, беше презентирана информацијата дека во Музејот на уметност во Далас на 28 мај започна изложба чиј повод е Louis Comfort Tiffany , и која ќе трае до 3 септември.

Изложбата вклучува 120 дела составени од витражи и секако, препознатливите ламби на Тифани кои на светските аукции достигнуваат баснословни суми. Иако го сакам Арт Нуво како уметнички правец, иако во голема мера е уметност на декорација (дури до толку што некои му ја одрекувале и неговата вредност како архитектонски стил), сепак морам да си признам на себе си дека ми е жал што Тифани својот талент го ограничил само на внатрешниот дизајн и декоративните уметности.

Пештерни цртежи од свила

Лоцирани по трасата од патот на свилата, пештерите во околината на кинескиот град Dunhuang со милениуми биле сведоци на многубројни аџилаци, чии приврзаници поминувајќи низ оваа област оставиле траги по ѕидовите на околните пештери, насликани со помош на свила.

Денеска пештерите представуваат туристичка атракција и се предмет на повеќегодишни археолошки ископувања.

Ова се дел од уметничките дела во пештерите Kizil и Dunhuang, во Кина.

1. Божицата на сонцето Nuwa и богот на месечината Fuxi од пештерата број 285 кај Dunhuang.
2. Божица на ветрот - слика од пештерата број 38 кај Kizil.
3. Слика од таваницата на пештерата број 249 кај Dunhuang. Богот на молната и богот на ветрот се од обете страни на Sumeru, Будистичка космичка планина. Богот на молата удара на тапани а богот на ветрот држи марама
4. Avalokiteshvara, со илјада раце. Сликаето со свила датира од 9 век. Пронајдено е пештерата број 17 кај Dunhuang.
5. Слика на богот на сонцето од пештерата број 17 кај Kizil.

Не ќе да е тоа анфас, туку профил

Читам требало да се стави слика на газдата на блогот. Јас имав еднашка ставено слика која стоеше неколку дена и ја одстранив не само поради оф топик коментарите (посебно оние од нерегистрирани корисници), туку поради лични ставови кои ќе ги дознаете ако си проролате по мојот блог на Блогерај.

Пошто бев тука и таму прозвана, што посредно што неспосредно, еве реков и ја да си стаам едно сликче, ама не ќе да е тоа анфас туку профил. Како нарачано ми дојде сабајлево одењето до ГТЦ каде сртенав четворица типови кои создаваат една необична улична урбана уметност - работење на профили во хартија за само 2-3 минути. И така додека клиентот си чека на својот профил, може да си направи лежерен муабет со момците.

Не знам дали е за верување дека тие специјално студирале 3 години на факултетот за убави уметности во Асизи, Италија, и 10 години се на улица работејќи го ова. Ама знам дека покрај уметност, ова е една голема умешност, и пред се многу креативност и усовршеност во техниката. Конктетно мојот профил ми го направи Бленди (тоа му е уметничкото име) едно урбано градско скопјанче што лебот си го заработува на овој начин, и како што кажа, ќе биде овде во Скопје само уште две недели. Во светот постојат два начина на кој човекот и професијата се сретнуваат. Едниот е кога тој сам ја избира својата професијата, а вториот е кога таа го бира него. Јас припаѓам во оваа втора група.

Моите интереси не застанаа само кај археологијата. Но знам зошто застанаа повеќето од нив застанаа кај буквата А. Случајно или не, можеби ке звучи необично или ќе делува како коинциденција, но јас ги сакам и овие области кои почнуваат на А:

Историјат на наградата Прицер

Најпрестижното признание во областа на архитектурата - Прицеровата награда е воспоставена 1979. година од страна на фондацијата Хајат како годишно признание на архитектите чије дело демонстрира сплет од квалитет - талент, визија и посветеност, со чија помош е остварен траен и значаен допринес во општеството и градежничкото опкружување преку ,,уметноста“ архитектурата. Често ја опишуваат и као Нобелова награда за архитектура.

Награда своето име го добила по фамилијата Прицер од Чикаго, позната по разните добротворни и културни активности, кои тие сметале дека треба да ги охрабруваат и стимулират. Целта не им била само да ја поткренат свеста на јавноста за изградените простори, туку и да инспирираат креативност во архитектонската пракса.

Номинаците го поднесуваат државници, писатели, здруженија на архитекти, т.е. виртуелно секој кој придонесува за значаен напредок и развој на архитектуата. Наградите се доделуваат независно од националноста, потеклото или идеологијата. Секоја година, заклучно со јануари, се поднесуваат преку 500 номинации од повеќе од 47 земји во светот. Финалната селекција ја обавува интернационално жири со тајно гласање.

Лауреатите на Наградата Прицер добиваат парична награда од $100,000, како формално признание, а од 1987. година и бронзен медаљон кој го дизајнираше чикшкиот архитект Луис Саливан, познат као татко на облакодерите. На едната страна е името на наградата, а на спротивната се втиснати зборовите кои накратко ги опишуваат постулатите од делото ,,Десет книги за архитектурата“ од Маркус Витрувие: firmness, commodity, delight“, (цврстина, удобност, уживање).

Досегашните победници можете да ги видите овдека.

Ова година добитник на наградата е Пауло Мендес да Роха, а официјалната церемонија ќе се одржи на 30 мај во Истанбул.

Египет ископува подводен Римски град

Египетските авторитети дадоа дозвола за подводни археолошки ископувања, на она што се чини дека веројатно представува Римски град потонат во морето.

Zahi Hawass даде изјава дека и официјално се пронајдени остатови од Римски град 35 км источно од Суецкиот канал, на Египетскиот северен брег.

Пронајдени се згради, бањи, остатоци од римска тврдина, монети, бронзени вази и фрагменти на керамика кои датираат од Римската епоха која во Египет траела од 30 год. п.н.е до 337 г.

Краток курс по археологија на симболите...

Пред некој ден го гледав филмот ,,Рудниците на Цар Соломон", со Patrick Swayze во главната улога. Немам намера да ви го раскажувам филмот, ниту пак да давам критички осврт. Она кое ме натера да го напишам овој пост беше една сцена во која погребуваат домородец, и при закопувањето член од екипата (англичанец-генерал во пензија-кој се затекнал со експедицијата) од почит во гробот му остава свој џепен цасовник кој некогаш го добил како поклон од Кралицата на Англија.

Можеби кај повеќето од гледачите оваа сцена ќе помине незабележано...но таа по многу нешта е важна за архелогијата, а и за етнологијата и етнографијата како нејзини помошни науки.

Зошто ја потенцирав токму оваа сцена. Затоа што поради оваквите, би рекла сосема махинални човекови постапки при некои обреди, се прават работи со кои може да се збунат идните генерации на истражувачи. Дали оваа сцена во целост ке ги отслика домородечките традиции или некогаш во иднината при некое археолошко ископување ќе внесе забуна за постоење на одреден материјален објект кај култура која не го поседува истиот и со тоа ке биде основа за изведување на сосема погрешни заклучоци, особено во доменот на духовните сведоштва.

Еден француски етнолог од светски калибар, Андре Лероа Гуран, кој воедно бил и одличен археолог и палеоантрполог, во своите белешки оставил значајни сознанија. Ќе земам само еден од многуте примери за објективни археолошки согледувања.

Замислете дека во еден ист век живеат еден калуѓер и еден генерал. Калуѓерот е голем верник, а генералот тежок атеист. По обичај кога умираат, калуѓерите се закопуваат без било какви прилози во гробот. За разика од нив генералите при церемониите се закопуваат со своето оружје, привезоци на униформата, лични работи, по некој трофеј (како канџи) или беџ со крилатите фигури на Слободата и потомството. По десеттина века нашиот атеист веројатно ќе испадне верник на некој култ на непознати женски божества, а скелетот на монахот засекогаш ќе ги сочува тајните на своите верски убедувања.

Постои едно нешто што не ми се допаѓа кај археологијата. Кога археолозите во некој гроб ќе најдат предмет од непознато потекло или неадекватна конотација (значи не можат никако да му најдат н.з.с.) веднаш го сврстуваат во редот на култни предмети. Поентата ми беше дека симболичките манифестации низ вековите треба да се проучуваат многустрано, бидејки не секогаш се потврда за обичаите (посебно верските).

Exeptum probabat regulam...познатата латинска поговорка е сосема погрешно транскрибирана. Исклучокот не го потврдува, туку го проверува правилото.

Го оличив мојот блог

Се запрашав колку всушност треба да биде лично она кое што го пишуваме на својот блог. И колку лично тоа треба да биде? Ако не пишуваш лични работи, тогаш ќе изгледа се многу стерилно. Ако пишуваш глупости, никој нема да те чита. Ако пишуваш премногу лично, тоа може да биде сватено во погрешна конотација.

Секој збор сведочи за нас. За тоа какви сме навистина, што не засега, што не боли, што не прави среќни, што не нервира... Блогот е тука и кога патиме и кога се радуваме...Значи прашањето е дали треба да се размислува на кој начин да се пишува, да се бираат зборовите или тие да одат по рандом..како што ни надоаѓаат мислите?

А зошто?

Затоа што е факт дека се што праќаме на нет, останува запишано таму на небото, во некоја архива, на некој сервер...и ако излезе некогаш на некој претражувач нашиот коментар, дали сме навистина спремни да се соочиме со себе си?

Каменото срце на Лондон

Нема само Скопје урбани легенди туку и дрги градови низ светот. Така на пример Лондон го има својот камен, еден древен и мистериозен објект кој е споменат од Шекспир, Вилијам Блејк и Дикенс.

Мистериозниот Лондонски камен ќе биде заштитен од зградата која треба да се руши. Дали со тоа Лондон ќе биде заштитен од старата античка легенда?

Означен како една од најважните градски реликвии уште од Средниот век (ако не и порано) ,,Лондонскиот камен" беше предмет на повторно внимание кога се појави веста дека ке се преместува во British Museum како експонат, поради тоа што зградата на која е потпрен, ќе се срамни со земја.

По мое мислење заштитата на Каменот и не е толку лоша идеја, со оглед на тоа што заедно со Tower Bridge, за овој реликт се врзува и една позната британска изрека : ,,Се додека каменот на Брут е заштитен, Лондон ќе напредува". повеќе
